Asks Department of Posts to come up with attractive investment schemes

HYDERABAD: Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan on Saturday suggested to the Department of Posts to come up with attractive investment schemes offering better returns for senior citizens.

Launching the National Postal Week celebrations on World Post Day here, he said special attention should be bestowed on senior citizens because many of them preferred to deposit their money in postal schemes. He asked Chief Postmaster General, Andhra Pradesh, Karuna Pillai to write to senior officials of her department about his suggestion.

The Governor said that delays in release of the deposited amount on maturity of National Savings Schemes certificates were hampering the plans of the senior citizens who depended on their hard-earned savings for important family needs.

Mr. Narasimhan said despite electronic communication, an email still could not beat the feel of an inland letter or a postcard that could offer. The good old letter would contain greetings between the sender and the receiver, the news it wished to convey and would speak of the seasonal conditions like the rains or the harvest in the region. Ms. Pillai said efforts were on to further improve the functioning of post-offices by taking up computerisation apart from recruiting more staff.

Post-Master General, Hyderabad, Usha Chandrasekhar welcomed the gathering. Earlier, Director-Postal Services Mariamma Thomas proposed a vote of thanks. The Governor gave away performance-related awards to several employees.
